BICESTER HERITAGE SUPER SCRAMBLE
Since 2015 the old RAF Bicester airbase – now Bicester Heritage classic car business hub – has echoed to the sound of car, bike, and aero engines during the increasingly popular Flywheel Festival, which in 2018 was sponsored by Classic and Sports Car magazine. Sadly, the magazine withdrew its sponsorship leading to the cancellation of this year’s event.
In compensation Bicester Heritage organised a Super Scramble -– like their normal Sunday Scramble; but bigger and better, lasting the whole day and adding demo runs around the test track.
A sold-out crowd had masses of interesting things to see – our highlight was a group of extremely rare Graber-bodied Alvises (Alvii?) — and do around the technical site, plus loads of stalls to spend their harded-earned on in one of the vast WW2 hangars. If that wasn't enough, an eclectic mix of two and four-wheeled vehicles covering practically every era of motoring history took to the track.
Among the most entertaining were a couple of rally Escorts that tyre-smoked and wheel-waved around the figure-of-eight course. The Rover-BRM turbine car that Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart took to 10th place in the 1965 Le Mans 24 hour race whistled its way round.
With warm sunny weather the Super Scramble really was super – and the first of many we hope.
